It has a 6 elements in 4 groups optical design. One of the most versatile and popular of all lenses in the Nikon lineup, this popular 85mm f/1 8 Nikkor lens provides the combination of good aperture "speed" and moderate telephoto length that comes in so handy for a wide range of photographic applications. The image perspective obtained using this lens is natural and highly suited to realistic portraiture effects; also, the wide maximum aperture enables greater isolation of the focused subject for an increased sense of intimacy with the subject. This version of the lens was Inroduced in March, 1975 (S/N 410001 onwards). A few changes were also being made to the design of this lens. The traditional old Nikkor physical scalloped focusing ring has been changed to a rubberized type grip and the aperture ring has a diamond ridged type of design which is closer to a modern Nikkor lens exterior appearance. The closest focusing distance has improved to around 3 ft from the 3.5 ft found on earlier series. NIC lens coating was also believed being used for its various lens elements. The lens' 28' 30' picture angle (the widest among telephoto lenses other than the 58mm lenses) makes for easier operation when following moving subjects, particularly at medium distances; here, again the f/1.8 aperture proves useful, as it allows for stop-action photographs under most common lighting conditions. Of course, the automatic diaphragm and meter coupling prong ensure full aperture operating convenience at all times. The optical performance of this lens is characterized by high resolution and excellent contrast, even wide open; NIC provides for full control of flare and ghost, as well as top color rendition. The minimum focusing distance possible with this lens is an improved 0.85m (3 ft)-perfect for tight head framing.
