It is a little confusing to discuss zoom lenses having focal lengths range of up to around 200mm at the longer end. Because, just like any other manufacturers, Canon has quite a number of options here, some were introduced to replace the older ones while some has been retained until the FD series was replaced with the EF autofocus lenses. From the early days of the FD 100-200mm f5.6, you will find the New FD 70-210mm f/4.0, New FD 75-200mm f/4.5, New FD 80-200mm f/4.0 and a luxurious New FD 80-200mm f/4.0L.
Anyway, lenses of this kind, which covers medium telephoto to full telephoto, offers more than above average optical performances and easy portability as they are not as complex and complicated in their optical designs. Focal lengths of 85mm, 100mm, 135mm and 200mm are the most frequently used telephoto focal lengths, and all of them are covered with a single zoom lens like the 70-210mm and 80-200mm types. You can use them for portraiture, sports or news event. Carrying four separate lenses around all the time would be far too much hassles, not to mention the time required to change them back and forth, any of these zooms having all the required range will make changing the angle simple and easy.

Canon has two very similar zoom lenses available in the FD series in those days. The FD 70-210mm f/4 has been around since the introduction of the Canon A-1while the FD 75-200mm f/4.5 was introduced in 1985, and was aimed at the users of the T-series cameras like the T50 and T70. Both feature one ring push/pull zooming and focusing control and thus enables zooming and focusing to be done in one operation, and the macro function allows focusing distances of only 0.44 m for the 70-210 mm and 0.55 m for the 75-200 mm. The magnification at these distances is 0.25X and 0.2X respectively.

The 70-210mm zoom lens has a zoom ratio of 3x and the 75-200mm has one of 2.7x. They are reasonably compact in size, easy to operate, and strangely both prices are also very close and affordable to most users with the f4.0 version selling slightly higher than the f4.5 version. Well, that could be the interim period as later years the f4 version was 'disappearing' from the display windows at retail outlets. Emerging was the new 80-200mm f4 L which also caused the original 80-200mm f4.0 a little difficult to convince on new buyers. Anyway, from the official Canon sales manual at around mid-85, only the FD 75-200mm f4.5 and the FD 80-200mm f/4.0L were still in productions. The one ring push/pull zoom control design was quite popular, which allows the lenses to have simultaneous zooming and focusing.
New FD 70-210mm f/4 Lens
This lens covers the focal lengths of four fixed focal length lenses: 85mm, 100mm, 135mm and 200mm. Even though it has a zooming ratio of 3, it is still designed compact and lightweight. In spite of its short length, aberration correction is very good.

A high refraction lens prevents coma at the center focal length position and maintaining high resolution and contrast throughout zoom range. A single ring permits simultaneous zooming and focusing. |
Macro focusing from infinity to 44cm is possible when the lens is set to 70mm. The 70-210mm zoom lens offers the brightness and high performance of an f/4 maximum aperture at an affordable price.
