The NiSi 112mm Natural Night filter is custom designed to screw into the Nikon Z 14-24mm f / 2.8 S lens hood. The SLIM structure of this filter ensures no vignetting even at 14mm on full-frame. The NiSi Lens Grade optical glass ensures no perceptible loss in transmittance. The Natural Night filter also has an oleophobic and hydrophobic coating allowing you to shoot in any weather conditions and to clean the filter with ease. The special colouring and coating applied cuts most of the frequencies associated with artificial lights. The Natural Night filter is also available in diameters from 40.5 to 95mm, as well as from 100 and 150mm. In the case of lenses with a smaller thread we recommend using a simple adapter ring. The NiSi Night Filter is designed to reduce the appearance of light pollution in images or video that include the night sky and illumination from artificial light sources. Using filters at night seems counterintuitive since it is generally desirable to allow more light through to the sensor. However, there are scenarios where filters are useful. Nisi’s natural night filter cuts out wavelengths associated with yellow streetlights hence and reduces the effect of light pollution in night images. The unwanted effect of using this filter is that it also blocks approximately 1 stop of light and has a slight magenta cast which is easily corrected in post processing. Shooting night cityscapes : I would always use the night filter for these scenes as some aspects of light pollution reduction are not as easy to achieve from post processing alone. It removes the unsightly yellow ting of street lights.

Shooting ‘still’ Milky Way images. Generally, I would avoid using the night filter for these scenes unless your camera has clean iso performance above iso3200 or you have a dedicated Milky Way lens that has an aperture of wider than F2.8. This is due to the 1 stop of light that this filter blocks – meaning you will need to compensate by increasing iso (limited by noise), increasing shutter speed (risking stars moving), or opening the aperture by 1 stop.
